Origin and meaning of the name
The name “Tatra Balsam” combines two strong ideas. The word “Tatra” refers to the mountain area below the Tatra peaks, where rich mountain herbs thrive. This natural environment became the basis of the product’s recipes. The word “Balsam” expresses gentleness, care, and a historical connection to medicinal elixirs. Originally, “balsam” referred to preparations with beneficial effects. It symbolized health and well-being.
Production history and traditions
The production of Tatra Balsam liqueurs draws on a long-standing tradition.
This tradition comes from domestic herbal liqueur production in northern Spiš and the Tatra region. There are documents about distilleries in the region as early as the 18th century. – for example, in Stará Ľubovňa, the oldest distillery in Slovakia was preserved. From these roots grew the idea of combining traditional recipes with modern production technology.
This approach created a product that honors both its origins and the present.
Production process – step by step
- Tatra water – The basis is crystal clear water from Tatra springs, which carries the freshness of mountain nature.
- Distillate – The distillate used is produced in a 7-column distillation plant, which ensures high purity, finesse and character of the product.
- Herbs – Carefully hand-picked mountain herbs, spices and fruits from the Tatra region are selected for their aromatic and characteristic properties.
- Maceration – Herbs are slowly macerated in a distillate, imparting their aroma and flavor; this process tends to be long-term, which enhances the depth of flavor and aroma.
- Maturation and filtration – After maceration, the liqueur is gently filtered and allowed to “rest” in special tanks, where the flavors combine and the aroma matures.

Tradition in modern dress
The Tatra Balsam line offers several types of liqueurs that differ in alcohol content, dominant flavors of herbs or fruits:
